Festivals - are there just too many?

 Status awaiting the festival season.
So, as with Pendulum last Summer, The Prodigy have found themselves whored out to the festival community as the muddy months beckon. Isle Of Wight, Global Gathering and Reading & Leeds are to name but a few of the crazy campsites the threesome are to endure in the next coming months which begs me (as a festivalgoer and someone of musical intellect - pah) to ask the question of necessity. If The Prodigy are playing at all of them anyway- why not merge the Readings and IOW's of our time and play at one GIGANTIC festival in a field full of eclectic music and androgynous crowds?

"It's a mad idea," I hear you whimper. People go to certain festivals for certain atmospheres. Glasto lets you take your own alcohol to see the bands which certainly sells for the un-sell outs of this world (still with me?). And although yes, this it does - upon arrival you are almost contract-bound to leave half your belongings behind in its mud-drenched capacity.

Those who opt for Reading often find themselves over-ridden with White Lightning-drinking 14-year-old emos (genre of attire entirely dependent upon the fashion indication at that time) and over-rated 'rockstars'. However, the line-up ceases to amaze me, with this year's headliners Radiohead and performances from Placebo, White Lies and Deftones as HUUUUGE selling points.

Of course, each festival has its individual style, flair, atmosphere and crowd participation. And don't get me wrong, I'm a massive fan of the outdoors music scenario, having been a festivalgoer all my music loving life. But what is the point of asking Blur to perform at both T and Glasto' or The Prodigy at every bloody festival known to man? (including Frequency merely across the border in Austria, I may add). The festival season is massive, the highlight of every young hippy's year. But as more festivals appear from under the woodwork and congest our NME gig listings pages - how do we know where to go?

Just so you know - at the minute i'm listening to the new Wave Machines album, finishing off my university degree and planning on attending IOW, Sonisphere, Reading and Bestival. Bring on the SUMMER.

I'm new to The Daily Music Guide and feel it almost essential to say a big warm welcome!

I'll be following this "heya" with a review of the brand new Fightstar album, my personal round-up of the up-and-coming festival season, and a look at unsigned music in the city of Southampton.

Looking at the news: Lady Gaga provided me with minutes of entertainment last night, albeit for her continual likeness to spoilt heiress Paris Hilton and entertaining on-the-road tales.

I'm still addicted to The Hills (unfortunately), Twilight (what girl isn't?), and Chelsea Football Club. Bar, that I'm your pretty standard music journalist.

On the subject of Twilight (random tangent, if I may)...what shall I read now? My life feels less complete without Edward and Alice Cullen, and I need a new obsession!

Get in touch! Ta Boys and Girls!
