Tilly & The Wall
Indie popsters Tilly and the Wall will be stepping into the Limelight on Monday night (27 October) when they make their welcome return to Belfast.
Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, the group formed in 2001 after the demise of several Omaha groups, including Conor Oberst's Park Ave, of which Neely Jenkins and Jamie Pressnall were members. Seven years later, the band have just released their third album and, according to lead singer and bass guitarist Kianna, they have settled into their stride.
"We started out as five people who liked to hang out with each other," explained Kianna, talking to the DMG whilst on the road in Birmingham. "We didn't know we were starting a band, we just ended up spending tonnes of time together.
"We've just released our third record and its a little bit bigger; we decided to try some new things. We've really settled in now and we know what each other wants."
Tilly & the Wall are well known for their alternative percussion section (instead of a drummer, Jamie tap-dances) and their seemless blending of musical genres. "We don't really try for anything but we end up as a mixture of folk, punk, rock and dance music," continued Kianna, "probably because we're all interested in different music.
"Jamie would tap dance to keep time at practice and we liked the idea and she was really good. Making a sound using your body is the most organic thing you can do. Later we added stomps and electronic beats, we like to layer," she added.
The band were in Belfast last February and they are eagerly anticipating the return. Kianna has even promised some treats for the local fans. "We love it. There's going to be a lot of new stuff but we do our older stuff too. And there'll be a few surprises as well," she promised. "We love it over there."
The dizzyingly unique Tilly arrangements of hip-shaking tap, overdriven guitar and close-knit girl-boy vocals are sure to delight the Belfast crowd, with hotly tipped local band Push Borders supporting.
Doors open at 9pm and tickets, priced £10, are on sale now from all usual Ticketmaster outlets.
