Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Whilst touring the USA and on to Australia, Does It Offend You, Yeah? take some time out to talk to The Daily Music Guide about the recent activity in the band and how America has been treating them...
DMG: So, you're in LA at the moment because you had a gig there last night, how did that go?
DIOYY: "Erm [laughs]... Well at first it was incredible because it was a sold out show, we're a UK band and we're breaking America so it's a big, big event... And then on the second to last song our singer broke his leg! [laughs] So we went off stage to check it out and got straight back out there with him on a stool to finish the show!”
DMG: Now that’s dedication! What were the crowd like, are they really into the music?
DIOYY: "Yeah- well they are now, they first started coming to the gigs doing their electro dancing... Now they’re going crazy doing loads of crowd surfing and it was pretty much a sold out tour over here with about 20 shows on and off over a few months. We toured with Bloc Party for a bit, Nine Inch Nails and then just done our own tour… We’ve definitely broken The States now… I think!”
DMG: As you guys are originally from Reading, there must have been a lot of competition in the area when starting out, what sort of advice would you give to a band that are trying to hit the big time and maybe even break The States!?
DIOYY: “Erm, well I dunno because it’s one of those weird arts that you never know the actual answer to. And there have been some amazing bands come from Reading but haven’t managed to make it in America- which I don’t understand why… For example, Oasis didn’t make it over here and I’m not really a fan- but they were huge!”
DMG: So it is pretty strange for a young UK band like yourselves to make it big out there, do you think that as a band, you’re delivering a genre that modern music fans want worldwide?
DIOYY: “Well, I’m not sure- because the thing with the Americans is that they’re all for mainly just the music and only the music… Whereas in the UK, if you’re a 12 year old, bisexual, heroin addict you’re going to hit number one and be spread across the front page of NME. But over here, we’ve found they don’t really care that much about the band… Which is lucky for us because we’re all ugly b******s! [laughs]”
DMG: No comment!... In the UK you’ve toured with some amazing bands, who has been the best and craziest to play with?
DIOYY: “Probably the most fun we’ve had on tour has got to be with Hadouken! They’re brilliant guys.”
DMG: You’ve had a hectic summer playing loads of festivals and tours, what have been the highlights of Summer '08?
DIOYY: “It’s got to be going to Japan again, it’s like the third time we’ve done Japan, so we really like it out there, doing Summersonic festival was great.”
DMG: So after all of that madness, will you guys be taking a break or soldiering on with something else?
DIOYY: “Well we’re going to Australia tomorrow for a few weeks, then our UK tour for three weeks and then we’re going underground to do the album… Literally we’re going underground to record the new album in a bunker!”
DMG: Brilliant! So judging from your latest album, you’re experimenting slightly with each track to sound different, what should we expect from the second installation?
DIOYY: "Well basically we’ve got nothing planned at the moment, but we’ll just write the music however it comes along. We’re writing and recording this one on our own this time and we’re hopefully going for something a bit darker, rough and ready!”
DMG: Finally, if you had to throw a few bands into a one day festival, who would it be?
DIOYY: “Rage Against The Machine, The Cure- circa 1990 and good old school U2- around the time of their first album!"
