Nelson

Nelson Nelson have been described as ‘French pop artists’ and have been compared to artists such as Interpol, New Order and Joy Division. With their album Revolving Doors already big in France, Nelson arrive in England to hopefully generate the same impact. It’s fair to say that this band is going to make a big impression on the UK. We caught up with them whilst they were in London to hear what they had to say:

DMG – In a lot of your songs you sing with a British tone, is this for any particular reason?

Nelson – It wasn’t on purpose, it was something that just happened, and we all come from different backgrounds. When people say we sound very British yes that’s good, but we’re try to have or own style. Was your question about the actual accent accent?

DMG – Yes!

Nelson – Ah that’s interesting, we’ve never been asked that question before! We’ve never really asked ourselves why, Greg’s got his own brand of accents and after having and English girlfriend that’s kind of rubbed off onto me. JB has quite a neutral one I have quite a bi-lingual accent! It’s just the way we’ve always spoken.

DMG – What would you say is your big influence?

Nelson - Our big influence, it changes every 2 or 3 months like with what we see, hear and watch.

DMG – What was your first initial influence that made you decide you want to be a band?

Nelson – Erm Joy Division, the city of Manchester, films and The Factory. Bands include The National, Animal Collective and TV on the Radio; we’re still listening to a whole range of music and we’re really into how to make different sounds

DMG - What films?

Nelson – There Will Be Blood!

DMG – You released your debut album last month, how’s that been?

Nelson – it’s a bit of a strange situation for us, we’ve been touring a lot doing loads of festivals in places like Austria, Belgium and now we’re finally in England to release the first album. In the mean time we’re currently working on the second one.

DMG - Is there a favourite song on the album?

Nelson – yes the next single, it’s really strange for us we released the album about 2 years ago so we’ve been playing the same songs for a long time.

DMG – How was your album received in France?

Nelson – In an indie way it has been received greatly, so it’s big in the underground scene

DMG - Do you agree with what critics in the UK have said about being a French electro band?

Nelson- Yes we did accept it, but we’re not really part of the whole Parisian Electro scene, we said in yesterday’s interview that for the first time we realised that in people in England associated us with this electro wave of bands like Justice, which is all ok but we started as a guitar band and then started adding a electro which was then eventually filtered in our music because it was part of our influences. Electronic music has always been a part of what we always loved

DMG - What’s next for you as a band?

Nelson – we want to tour for the first album in England and we will make a second album, the thing is we’re writing better songs at the moment and we’re excited to produce them into music.

DMG - Is there any big festival that you want to play this year?

Nelson – Erm, Glastonbury and Leeds festival!
