Michael Jackson dies aged 50

At 2:26pm local time on 25th June 2009, Michael Jackson died.

The King of Pop collapsed at his home in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles, noted by arriving paramedics to have already been in cardiac arrest. Resuscitation attempts continued for over an hour after Jackson's arrival at UCLA Medical Center, but to no avail.

While the true cause of his death will not be known until the results of the post-mortem are revealed later on Friday, there is already speculation that an overdose of the painkiller Demerol, may have been to blame.

Just hours after news of Jackson's death broke, fans began gathering around the UCLA Medical Center in their thousands. The crowds' impromptu dances and sing-alongs continued throughout the day, with shrines being set up not only in mourning for the star's death, but also in celebration of his life.

Having sold an estimated 750 million records worldwide, Michael Jackson is one of the most successful artists of all time, notching up 13 Grammy Awards and having had all four of his solo albums top the charts the world over. He also boasts seven UK number 1 singles to date.

Since his death, Jackson's songs and albums have already started to make their mark on the various iTunes charts around the globe, while 14 records from his back catalogue have climbed into the Top 20 albums on Amazon.co.uk.
