Black Stone Cherry - Brixton Academy, London (14/12/2008)
Sevendust are one of those sadly underrated bands, finding the majority of their popularity and fan base overseas in their American homeland. This is evident in the crowd turnout as they kick things off in Brixton. Dripping with stage presence, the vocalist holds the, albeit small, crowd captive and they impress with their mix of soulful lyrics and earth-shattering metal. They exit the stage promising that next time they return it will be because we, the crowd, invited them.
Stone Gods are certainly causing their own amount of hype amongst the ever-increasing crowd. Hushed whispers, mixed with almost disgusted comments, confirm that yes, they are The Darkness without the girly one. Throwing themselves off speakers and jumping around the stage like loonies, their new style of music is a million miles away from The Darkness. A perfect choice of warm-up band for Black Stone Cherry and surprisingly heavy, Stone Gods do well to impress an unsure crowd and should be happy in the knowledge they did their existing fans proud.
The Academy is now fully packed out and by the time Black Stone Cherry take the stage, it is obvious that the majority of the crowd were really only being polite to the previous two bands. The audience love every second of it, even sporadically breaking into mosh pits. The entire band put on one hell of a show; the guitarist looks as though they have kept him in a box all day as he throws himself around with a flagrant disregard for personal safety. However, it is the drummer that really steals the show.
Not content with a very impressive drum solo, during a jam which lasts around 15 minutes, the band all swap places, also calling members of the other two bands on-stage and he demonstrates his skills further by taking the front mic and performing a harmonica solo - when seen live it really is quite breath taking. Black Stone Cherry exit to thunderous applause and there is not a disappointed audience member to be seen. All three bands were excellent but it was the headliners who truly blew everyone away.
