Born From Pain - Survival (Metal Blade)
This is an album that may cause some excitement among a relatively small crowd, but risks going unnoticed by others. Like a lot of its Metal Blade counterparts, Born From Pain has been leading the way for European metal bands for longer than you may think. Originally from Holland and formed over ten years ago, the band is ready to release their fifth studio album, Survival.
Clearly pioneering the way for artists such as Hatebreed and Throwdown, Born From Pain use their experience wisely, creating a well executed mix of metal and hardcore. The hardcore edge definitely leads the way in this most recent release, preferring the breakdowns of the genre, as opposed to previous releases which showcased more metal riffs and Slayer-esque thrash influences.
Opening track 'Sound Of Survival' explodes into life after a recorded sample (the use of which has increased since previous albums) of wailing sirens and general chaos. This makes for Survival's most successful track. With lyrics such as "fight and die on your feet", the inspiring lyrics are everpresent, giving each song that bit more strength and meaning.
The choruses are an important part to BFP's sound, entering a new high-speed realm of chugging guitars and crashing drums which finish in epic sounding, guitar-lead slower sections. These moments, as well as some of the riffs, have a melodic edge to them which result in their songs, as well as certain hooks and lyrics, becoming memorable and catchy. They stick with you long after you’ve finished with the album.
Born From Pain has never completely broken into the mainstream and has had several member changes, but this hasn't affected the group's attitude towards their music. BFP sounds as confident as ever, a necessary quality to be successful in the hardcore genre. The mature sounding riffs and vocals all add to BFP's well rounded sound, creating an album that is successful as it is brutal.
This is an impressive album from a band that know what they want and how to get it. Survival will definitely keep existing fans happy and is an excellent way to get new listeners hooked.
