Conor Oberst - I Don't Want To Die (In Hospital) (Wichita)

Conor Oberst Over the many years of popular music production there have been many topics discussed by our esteemed performers. Love, loss, drugs and even oddly coloured bikinis have been sung about. However, needing to get out of a hospital because you're worried you might die in there is a pretty new one to music aficionados!

Conor Oberst's new single is an ode to the worry of ending your days in that place everyone has a fear of. Many reasons for this fear are stated; looking like a girl in his gown, lonesome days, can't smoke or get drunk and having to watch soap operas.

The distress and desperation in Conor's voice when he shouts "help me get my boots on" pull you into the problem he's facing, while the speed of the music helps you realise he's getting into a bit of a frenzy.

The funny thing is that everything said in the song makes sense and is delivered brilliantly. Song-writing like this doesn't happen too regularly these days and it harks back to the days of Dylan and Cash.

The music is infectious and the pace is frantic. You end the tune genuinely worried about his plight. The song is fantastic and in a morbid way makes you smile - but there is one worry...did he ever get out of the hospital? Hopefully the next single will reveal all.

Rating: 4/5
