Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains (Sisters Den Records)

Cymbals Eat Guitars Whilst the title may hint of a petulant child constantly asking "Why?" to every answer given, Why There Are Mountains is in no-way infantile. The debut album from New York four piece Cymbals Eat Guitars, it was originally released without the backing of a record label - forcing the band to persuade record shops to stock the record themselves.

But as they say, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing properly. And while there are only nine tracks, Why There Are Mountains is perfectly formed.

Continuing the sentence begun by the album title '…And The Hazy Sea' captures your attention from the word go. With its almost anthemic opening, the track musically encompasses both landscapes and everything in between as the opening fanfare dies away to allow for a short respite before once again reaching for the stars.

Possibly the most radio-friendly track, 'Some Trees (Merritt Moon)' presents yet another of the band's musical sides. Much heavier than the opening track, 'Some Trees' is two-and-a-half minutes of pure perfection.

The title 'What Dogs See' hints once again to the inquisitive and questioning themes which run through the album. But in contrast to '…And The Hazy Sea', there is no fanfare preceding this answer. Instead an ominous repeating bass line sends shivers down the spine, resulting in one of the mellowest tracks on the LP also being one of the darkest. The track's production does nothing to soothe the nerves. And towards the end a bed of atonal strings lay the final touches, which doesn't so much explain 'What Dogs See' as much as "why they bay and cower".

If '…And The Hazy Sea' attempted to cover the entire musical spectrum, the album's closing track, 'Like Blood Does' is, for the most part, the complete opposite. With a relatively paired down accompaniment, the track allows Joseph Ferocious' vocals a unique opportunity to take centre stage as the rest of the band prepare to dismantle the roof with their parting flourish.

And so the album ends as it began, sending a clear message to the rest of the music industry to watch out, because Cymbals Eat Guitars have landed.
