Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip - Angles (Sunday Best)

Dan Le Sac Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip are definitely ones to watch out for in the urban scene this year. Upon first listen, Angles sounds totally polarised from anything else around at the moment. Whilst Timbaland seems to be producing everything we currently hear, there are no American influences on this album, resulting in a fresh, exciting, modern, and most of all British sound.

The lyrics on the album are a breath of fresh air. They cut away from the sexual content plaguing many artists today, instead giving the listeners raps about things close to Le Sac's heart, taking you on a journey through his life in a light-hearted, thought-provoking way.

The first track on the album, 'Beat That My Heart Skipped', is a sure-fire urban hit. Using a mixture of synths and a drum beat to make the song perfect for breakdancing, we get a taster of things to come - and they're delicious.

Carrying on through the album, 'Development' makes use of an infectious guitar lick, featuring thoughtful lyrics like: "I ain't an alcoholic, I just drink a lot/Maybe I'm a genius or maybe I just think a lot". Rock influences are evident throughout the album, and this may help push it higher up the charts.

Meanwhile, 'Fixed' is an insightful look into the UK hip-hop scene, and my favourite track on the album, due to its catchy beat and humourous undertones. Expect this to be a future single. 'Tommy C' slows things down a little, utilizing a simple piano beat that doesn't distract from the main question - why are women so obsessed with looks?

Many different genres, from dance, to soul and RnB are mixed into this intelligent album, which makes it very experimental and unique. However, the one big problem with this album is a serious lack of radio-friendly tracks, with only 'Beat That My Heart Skipped', 'Fixed', and current single 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' possible contenders for mainstream appreciation.

Having said all this, refusing to go the radio-friendly route is not all bad - it gives Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip an identity, and makes them a refreshing alternative to others in the urban scene.

"Giving the listeners raps about things close to Le Sac's heart" - Le Sac is the producer, not the MC! "There are no American influences on this album" - Scroobius Pip cites American artists like Rakim and KRS ONE as his influences on more than one occasion on this album. And who needs radio-friendly tracks to make a good album?

Comrade RGoZ in Cornwall, UK writes...
An amazing album; full of ideas & inspiration. It's very compelling, with tracks like Thou Shall always kill... But why has the reviewer only given it three out of five??

Will in Edinburgh writes...
This is an amazing album but I feel the reviewer misinterpreted the quotation from the song 'Development'. The line "I ain't an alcoholic, I just drink a lot/Maybe I'm a genius or maybe I just think a lot" is given to highlight the nonsensical and generic lyrics that are in modern hip hop songs today, this is seen by a voice which interrupts just after this line asking Scroobius to start the verse over again, saying something new.
