Daniel Merriweather ft. Adele - Water And A Flame (BMG)

Daniel Merriweather's debut album has simmered along nicely since its release last year. It's now shifted more than 200,000 copies and shamefully has started appearing in bargain bins. Love & War is a mix of soulful pop and smokey ballads, and this duet with Adele is one of the latter.

In a year when females dominated charts and probably the forthcoming awards, it's been difficult for the men to get a look in. That means singles like this have struggled to get on playlists dominated by Lady GaGa, Paloma Faith, Pixie Lott and their like.

However, bringing in the Grammy winning Adele might help Merriweather get more coverage for 'Water And A Flame'. Built on a smoochy groove, the song immediately creates images of a smokey dance hall. Merriweather's gravely voice fits that mood perfectly and Adele's rich tones dovetail beautifully.

While the world doesn't need another pleading song of broken hearts, there won't be many pop songs as good as this released over the next few months. The production is smooth and very polished with some interesting flourishes, which underline Merriweather's experiences with Mark Ronson, to whom he is often likened.

If you give this a listen and fall for its charm, you'll do well to check out the album, which contains more than enough satisfaction for those looking for a bit of a break from hip-hop dominated pop or those thousands of Amy Winehouse soundalikes!
