Delays - Everything's The Rush (Fiction)
Southampton lads Delays have made a big step up with their third album Everything's The Rush. They'v e always been a reliable source of fantastically uplifting singles, from 'Long Time Coming' to 'Valentine', but their albums do sometimes tend to contain a touch of filler. Not on this occasion - this is their most consistent and impressive album to date.
Whereas previously the band resorted to slower songs and ballads when standards dipped slightly, here they arguably steal the album. String-laden epics litter the album and the beautiful 'One More Lie In' is a real mark of a band at the top of their game. It would be a shame if the public continue to ignore such fantastic song-writing, along with the melodic vocals of the Gilbert brothers. 'Keep It Simple' and 'Pieces' continue in this epic vein, the string-tinged latter a particular triumph.
It is though the life-affirming pop songs which Delays have always delivered on and it is what their loyal fanbase is built upon. In this aspect they certainly don’t disappoint. Opener ‘Girl is on Fire’ has a real sing-along chorus and comes to a dramatic crescendo with frenetic vocals and a thundering drum beat.
Singles 'Hooray' and 'Love Made Visible' are bliss defined, while 'Hooray' could well be a festival highlight if the sun shines. Meanwhile, 'Friends Are False' is a more sharp-edged affair with the contrasting vocals of the Gilbert brothers working wonders again, as well as sterling work from drummer Rowly.
The album comes to a close with the lovely 'Jet Lag', which somehow makes the rather sombre lyrics "goodbye my friend/this is the end" sound like the best thing in the world, followed by 'The Earth Gave Me You', another beauty, which challenges 'One More Lie In' for the album highlight tag.
While the non-appearance of the exquisite 'Panic Attacks' from the Love Made Visible EP is slightly disappointing, there are still more than enough reasons to buy this album. It is clear from their website that the band are determined to make this album the huge success it deserves to be and Everything’s The Rush should undoubtedly be your soundtrack to the summer. Now go out and buy it!
