Duke Special – Sweet Sweet Kisses (Universal)

Duke Special's new single 'Sweet Sweet Kisses' is a great reminder of why you need Peter Wilson's songs in your life. Taken from third album I Never Thought This Day Would Come, the formula hasn't changed from the two previous records, but there is definitely something life-affirming about his material.

The tinny piano, brass elements, drums and other quirky instruments drive this track along with an endearing pop sensibility that makes you want to put it on repeat. The real secret here is the lyrical content. It may seem easy to justify the carnival atmosphere of the music with the idea that there were "sweet sweet kisses at the start" of this failed relationship. But in his usual bittersweet way Wilson also lets us know that the honeymoon period didn't last very long before "what you did, it wrecked us at the seams".

The upbeat and theatrical nature of the arrangement therefore hides a deeper regret of lost love. This isn't a throwaway pop song but one that has very emotional roots. Second track 'Hearth & Home' deals with similar subject matter and sounds like a cross between a traditional Irish ballad and a 1940s show tune, but it's well worth investigating.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the quality of both these songs means 'Sweet Sweet Kisses' is one of the best introductions to the music of Duke Special you could ask for.
