Elbow - One Day Like This (Fiction)

The sort of song Elbow do effortlessly well, 'One Day Like This' is arguably the highlight of the Manchester band's superb album, The Seldom Seen Kid.

With an undercurrent of gorgeous strings which begin rather mournfully before building into a joyous crescendo in the second half, along with Guy Garvey’s everyman vocals and his growing lyrical nous, make for a very stirring listen. 'Throw Those Curtains Wide, One Day Like This A Year Will See Me Right' is sung like a terrace chant for the last couple of minutes. Anyone who doesn’t find themselves singing along with a huge smile on their face by the end must almost certainly have something missing from their lives.

With the 2012 Olympics and Euro 2008 on the horizon, this is the kind of song that would fit perfectly to the montages that often end the television coverage of such events. It is a tremendously rousing anthem that Elbow always seem to have at least one of on their albums (see 'Forget Myself' on their previous album, Leaders of the Free World).
