Goldfrapp - Rocket (Mute)

Reminiscent of an 80s aerobics video, Goldfrapp's new single works the uplifting cheesy pop shtick to its limits. Like a combination of Blondie, Van Halen and Mr. Motivator, 'Rocket' conjures up images of neon leg warmers and bad hairdos. Giving us a teaser of new album Head First, due out in late March, it is clear that Goldfrapp have lost none of their sparkle.

Alison uses her ever sultry tones as a hook, drawing the listener in to a track that feels somehow like a guilty pleasure, wrapped up in nostalgia and synths. Funnily enough, there is an uncanny similarity between Alison Goldfrapp and Debbie Harry's appeal as they both walk that, sometimes dangerous, edge between the chic and the ridiculous.

Ludicrously catchy and relentlessly upbeat, 'Rocket' uses its shiny squeals and drum propulsion to thrust you into the outer reaches of budget sci-fi movie, electro heaven. Sweet and sharp mix perfectly in order to produce a highly addictive single that ends up making you feel dirty but oh so good.

Indeed, you just can't help but hit the repeat button to be filled with that delicious inner shame once more. Potentially, the only thing missing from this equation is a montage sequence for the video, though that might already be in the works.

Goldfrapp - A&E (Mute)
Goldfrapp has a history of being able to blend electronica with pop/indie to great effect and with 'A&E', they have certainly had no problem achieving it again.
