Good Shoes - Under Control (Brille)

Good Shoes It's not been a great twelve months for guitar music. With women dominating the minds of music programmers, record bosses and seemingly the public, only Kasabian have come out smiling. Even the great hope, Arctic Monkeys, failed us, with a dissapointing and ultimately dull release.

Now we're in a new year perhaps things will change. However, it's unlikely that Good Shoes will be leading the charge. Favoured by many reviewers, this rather dull three minutes underlines why British bands have struggled. It pushes no boundaries and borrows so obviously from bands of the mid noughties that it sounds instantly outdated.

Whether indie-pop is a relevant term anymore is arguable, but this will quickly get filed in that pigeon-hole. There's jangly guitars and then a shouty, slightly David Byrne style vocal, and it's all so Franz Ferdinand, that Alex Kapranos might get on the phone to his lawyers.

"The more I want – the less I need it" Rhys Jones groans over the increasingly incessant and annoying guitar. If it's supposed to feel edgy, it falls alarmingly short, and ends up even more nauseating than Hockey's 'Song Away' from last year.

British music has been on a high, with some exciting and exhilarating releases in recent years, what we don't need are anymore bands and singers that want to sound like Talking Heads, Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen. Good Shoes they might be, but not many people will be wearing them.

Indie popsters return, but we're not sure why they've bothered. It is 2010 after all, not 2005.
