Grammatics - Bush Hall, London (11/11/2008)
Up and coming theatrics from one of Leeds finest bands, Grammatics mean business tonight. They leave the chit chat and stage gimmicks up North as their atmospheric, Gothic brand of indie pop immediately transports you into a dark dream.
This Yorkshire four-piece - consisting of drums, bass, keys and a cellist - conjure up intelligent pop songs that twist and turn like a terrifying ride on the German autobahn. Each tune is well crafted and catchy, but blink and you'll be left floundering to get back on track. Think Foals at the opera.
The quads cram the set full of new songs, including their latest single ‘The Vague Archive’ - a pacy track with heart-felt lyrics, and proof that the bands recent studio time has paid off. The crazy time signatures provided by the rhythm section compliment the theatrical vibe from the keyboard and romantic sliding cello.
Tonight’s performance of ‘New Franchise’ perfectly showcased that the Grammatics aren’t just a band with big choruses; each bit of the song is well thought out. The cellist, accompanied by the lead singers pounding Hammond-style keys makes the music haunting and dramatic; the only thing missing is a smoke machine.
One of the things that really make this band stand out is that the lead singer can actually carry a note and sounds like he was probably classically trained. His rich, velvety operatic style is incredibly powerful live and easily up there with the likes of Muse front man Matt Bellamy. The lead singer gets a girl mate up on stage to squeal along with him for a few tracks. It’s a shame, because it sounded potentially very special, but she’s not miked up properly and was barely audible.
Grammatics were polished and flawless to perfection. Currently number three in the MTV2 charts, this band from Leeds is definitely one to watch for 2009.
