Heads We Dance - Love Technology (This Is Fake DIY Records)

Heads We Dance Not often does a band's consistency make it inconsistent within its genre. The dance and disco pop scene has always given groups the ability to create a massive hit before they struggle off into obscurity, desperately trying to recreate it.

Fortunately for Heads We Dance, all the tracks featured on Love Technology have the potential to be big hits in their own rights, rather than complementing one major track.

There has been a growing momentum in the last three years for Pete, Yoni and Becky who make up Heads We Dance, who've gained themselves a reputation for spotting some great remixing talent before anyone else.

They've taken sci-fi influences from 'Metropolis', Philip K Dick and Kraftwerk, alongside inspiration from bands like The Human League and Pet Shop Boys. When combined with the 21st century it creates a cheesy, glam-sounding space-pop concoction.

First track, 'The Human Touch', is the perfect introduction to what is in store on Love Technology - retro bass and synths, stuttering and energetic beats mixed with familiar electronic effects that'll put you on a modern dance floor via the 1980s.

'When The Sirens Sound', which is being released as a single, highlights the band's aim of creating pop songs mixed with dance production. Starting appropriately with sirens, followed by a bassline has just a few seconds to establish itself before the synths, wails and other effects kick in and the track is on its way.

The reworking of Kraftwerk track 'Computer Love' shows their finely-tuned remixing ability. Introduced nostalgically with the sound of a dial-up MODEM that seems to have slipped too quickly into the past. They've made the track their own while still managing slip in the odd Kraftwerk-style laser swoosh here and there.

'Ubik' gets under your skin and pushes excitement through all your nerves until your body is itching to move as it starts with its light electronic beats and soft vocals before taking time out anthemic style until a heavy bass roars in. 'Gold City' has a hint of synth-pop duo Erasure, with up-tempo synths and majestic vocals, a theme that features in most of the songs.

Undoubtedly, the digital age plays a major part in music these days and is regularly, and often rightly, criticised. You can almost forgive it for the horrific auto-tuning that creates careers for talentless pop stars, because it can also be used to create albums like this. And after listening to Heads We Dance, you'll love technology too.

An album full of fantastic floor-fillers - with a little help from the 1980s, of course!
