The Hot Melts – Edith (Epitaph/Wonderland Records)

Hot Melts The Hot Melts are a difficult bunch to pin down. Though obviously drawing on a number of surf and punk influences, their sound manages to retain a relatively poppy element overall. The four-piece from Liverpool have released ‘Edith’ to coincide with their forthcoming UK tour alongside the equally lively This City and Canterbury, which hints at being a pretty lively affair.

Although the band’s previous efforts, such as ‘(I Wish I Had) Never Been In Love’, demonstrated a significant deal of promise, ‘Edith’ sounds like a fairly repetitive jamming session by comparison. In terms of song structure, The Hot Melts aren’t really breaking free from their comfort zone here, such is the simplicity of the ‘sports computer game soundtrack’ vibe they’ve created with ‘Edith’.

Even though there aren’t any problems with singer Will Baylis’ vocals, pitched somewhere between those of a young Bono and The Music’s Rob Harvey, the composition of the parts around him does little to inspire.

With the current state of British weather conditions being what they are, there was a great opportunity to suggest that The Hot Melts are exactly what this country needs, to loom large over the current freeze. Sadly though, ‘Edith’ ensures that the thaw will have to wait.

Rating: 2.5/5
