InMe - Engine Room, Brighton (21/04/2009)

InMe The Engine Room was more than busy, with InMe fans of all ages, and all musical tastes, squeezed into a venue little bigger than a recording studio - that is, a recording studio with a massive bar taking up over a third of the room.

Following two support bands which had received lukewarm reception at best, complete derision at worst, InMe came on to thunderous applause. Proceeding to spend the next half hour fiddling with various microphones, wires and other musical paraphernalia, the applause they received on actually starting the set was less excited and more bored.

Starting with '7 Weeks', the crowd was quickly won over again and started jumping in unison, causing the already overheated venue to start, quite literally, dripping with enthusiasm. The band stormed through a catalogue of old songs and new favourites, revealing new album Herald Moth to be continuing along the progressive line taken with Daydream Anonymous.

'Single Of The Week', a riff-laden, melody driven track, was given the best reception by the crowd, although a couple of more downbeat songs provoked an almost reverential hush.

New guitarist Ben Kostantinovic, playing his first gig with the band, had a nervous energy which belied his incredible skill. To be fair, the gig couldn't really have gone worse for him, as a solo went spectacularly wrong, leaving vocalist Dave McPherson to kind of hum along for a minute, and the equipment breaking so frequently the set was peppered with long, uncomfortable gaps.

Mistakes and bad luck aside, the gig appeared to go spectacularly well for all those present (maybe not the band) as the audience laughed, danced and sung their way through song after song. Dave and Greg McPherson provided the witty banter and stopped people from getting bored in the frequent intervals.

Highlights included 'Otherside', 'Chamber' and 'Myths & Photographs'. All in all, another fabulous gig from a band determined to rock out with the best of them well into 2010. So far, it looks more than likely.

Rating: 3/5
