Jay Jay Pistolet - Scala, London (11/11/2008)
With looks similar to Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon, Pistolet had the women in the audience swooning before he had even opened his mouth, so imagine their delight when he began his thoughtful, melancholic, and very impressive set.
Songs such as 'Happy Birthday You' and 'Always On My Way Back Home' thoroughly entertained the crowd, who were happy to listen to Jay Jay's humorous quips and remarks between his folk-tinged acoustic tracks. Reminiscent of Noah and the Whale's recent sound (his new Happy Birthday You EP was produced by Charlie Fink of Noah and the Whale), Pistolet appears at home when he is sorrowfully pouring his heart out, sometimes ironically, but always with warmth and affection.
Acoustic sets in larger venues can sometimes fail to keep the attention of the whole audience. This was the not the case with the 21-year-old Pistolet. Silence fell around the Scala for every song, as he kept everyone entranced with his charming style.
Laura Marling ended the evening's entertainment with yet another flawless set; a mix of well-known tracks ('Night Terror', 'Cross Your Fingers', and 'Alas, I Cannot Swim') and lesser known B-sides and unreleased material, all of which were met with rapturous applause and universal admiration.
Her awkwardness and vulnerability in front of a capacity crowd was endearing, and, as Jay Jay Pistolet had previously done, her interaction with the crowd was witty and down-to-earth. It was a hugely impressive night, from an up and coming singer-songwriter and an established Mercury-nominated one too.

Jay Jay Pistolet - Scala, London (11/11/2008)
Justin James Hayward-Young was personally asked to support Laura Marling on these London dates at the Scala and it's no surprise, because he provided the perfect start to a haunting night of pop-folk music.
