Jay Jay Pistolet – Happy Birthday You EP (Stiff Records)

A year on from the release of his debut single, Jay Jay Pistolet is back with a four-track EP, on the back of some well-received support slots for the likes of Laura Marling, Katie Melua and Noah And The Whale.

The quality of the EP’s title track shines through with a certain effortless poise, characterised by some heartfelt vocals, lush arrangements and a showtune-style 'oompah oompah' rhythm section. The song has a warming sense of familiarity about it; not through a lack of originality per se, but thanks instead to Pistolet’s canny ability to conceive the type of melodies which seem destined to breathe life into a dull winter.

While encounters with slow-burners 'Bags Of Gold' and 'Always On My Way Back Home' show the songs to be suitable vehicles for Pistolet's superb vocal range, this four-track offering is proof that his approach has developed considerably since his early demos first emerged last year.

Full of undeniable warmth and charm, the 'Happy Birthday You' EP marks the arrival of another talent in the UK’s increasingly well-stocked folk ranks. It seems likely that Jay Jay Pistolet will look back on this release as the moment when his songwriting began to reach the wider audience which it has long deserved.
