Keane - Spiralling (Island)
The new single from Keane seems to tick all the necessary 'nu-indie' boxes, but can the sobbing bards of the music world really cut it playing with the bigger boys?
The song is a concise ditty that comes in at just over three and a half minutes. It stands separately enough from their back catalogue to suggest that Keane are pursuing a new musical direction, away from the black painted bedroom with bookshelves laden with Lord Byron poetry and into the local disco. They're ready to get down and dirty (although not too dirty, mind) with the kids.
The listener is faced with twangy '80s guitars from the start, a Dizzee Rascal-style drumbeat and even the odd "whoo!" thrown in for good measure. The lyrics are even more interesting, and seem to be taking inspiration from Genesis with the words: "I fashioned you from jewels and stone/I made you in the image of myself".
Though it's extremely doubtful that Keane will continue to follow this new musical tangent in the future, this single comes across mostly as an attention-grabber, something to get you interested in the new album. Keane fans - fear not, they're the same as they ever were, for all that it's worth.
