King Creosote - Coast On By (Domino Records)

Released on 27th April, a week after the launch of his new album Flick The Vs, this is the exciting return of King Creosote's music. A man who arguably deserves to be far better known, this new track is a delightful surprise, building upon his previous work.

Creosote's stripped back folk music, prevalent in previous songs such as '678', has been replaced with a melodic Postal Service-esque sound. While Creosote (or Kenny Anderson to his mum) has used samples previously in songs such as Klutz, an electronic sound has never been this prominent before.

However, the music is not just there as a sound bite. With the lyrics, the song sounds optimistic and sad, all at the same time. King Creosote is from Fife in Scotland, and 'Coast On By' reflects the thoughts of many who live in small towns; the sense that you are trapped, isolated and that life is passing you by.

On a Youtube video, King Creosote describes the song as the result of "three happy accidents" while trying to create a pop song. In regard to creating a pop song, Creosote has succeeded by crafting a song that stands up to repeat listening.

For those new to King Creosote's music, this song is an excellent place to start. After this, dig backwards into his frankly massive back catalogue, and you will not be disappointed.
