Laura Steel - Running (Rollon Entertainment)

Twenty-four-year-old singer/songwriter Laura Steel is no shrinking violet. Within a matter of days she decided to ditch academic plans in favour of a music career and has been grafting hard at it ever since.

It’s hard to define Steel; an effort to do so would probably describe her as somewhere in between the Sugababes and the musical daydream vocals of Sia.

Steel has wasted no time forming a name for herself on the London live circuit, headlining various venues including the Soho Revue Bar, Café De Paris and Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. Her hard work seems to be paying off as her debut, 'Running', has been picked up by channel five’s the gadget show.

The track is an alternative pop number merging electro and dance sounds, with the production comparable to that of the 1990s hypnotic dance movement, the lyrics being equally contagious.

‘Running’ is essentially a break up and break free song, where the composer emphasizes the mental as well as physical departure from a degenerate relationship. Steel’s vocals are raw, uncomplicated and sincere and thus enhance the lasting affect of the track.

‘Running’ not only sounds like a hit, it has all connotations of a dance classic: intelligent lyrics, infectious hook and familiar sounds. In a decade or so when the 'best of noughties' dance music will be in circulation, this track will most definitely be listed.
