Marmaduke Duke - Kid Gloves (14th Floor Records)
For those not in the know, Marmaduke Duke is the creation of Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil and Sucioperro frontman JP Reid, who are also known rather mysteriously as The Atmosphere and The Dragon.
This conceptual side project began in 2005 with the release of The Magnificent Duke, which was the first of a mythological musical triology. Four years later The Duke has returned with new song 'Kid Gloves', the debut single to be taken from the highly anticipated second album Duke Pandemonium.
It’s a mysterious and strangely enticing little number that instantly draws you in on the first listen. With a chilled out beat and almost lo-fi theme it’s a slight change of direction for the Scottish lads, but one that works very well indeed.
Connie Mitchell of Sneaky Sound System fame lends her gentle vocals to the track, adding another layer of enchantment into the mix. Couple with that some progressive synth elements and a sprinkling of strings and it becomes clear that the experiment has paid off.
The almost surreal nature of ‘Kid Gloves’ is heightened by the enigmatic cartoon video which forms the first section of a three-part story to be completed with the next two singles.
For those expecting Biffy-style rock you may be a tad disappointed, but keep an open mind as this is an entrancing track highly capable of sucking you in to the mystical world of The Duke.
