The Miserable Rich - Pisshead/Boatsong (Humble Soul)

The Miserable Rich Brighton five-piece The Miserable Rich offer up a pisshead of the musical variety. This 'Pisshead' is definitely one you can introduce to your friends. The EP is a minimal work, emphasising quality and tone above over-production and synthetic instruments.

'Pisshead' sounds like a baroque drinking song that your great, great grand-daddy might have listened to. The plodding bassline monotonously sounds in the background, perfectly suiting the dry lyrics: "I'm dead as a dodo/And flat on my ass/If you take my photo/I'll show you some class". The mood progresses to an uplifting chorus with soaring violins and xylophones, raising the sentiment to a sort of chirpy nihilism.

If 'Pisshead' is a drinking song, 'Boatsong' is what one would listen to after passing out on a waterbed. The strings and drums become more displaced and the vocals take on a much more gentle breathy quality. One aptly feels like one is drifting on a raft at sea, looking upwards at the stars whilst being gently moved along by the waves.

Both 'Pisshead' and 'Boatsong' are well arranged and compliment each other perfectly for release in EP form. They demonstrate an emotional range, lyrical creativity and musical dexterity that owes as much to Gustav Holst as to Ray LaMontagne. Hopefully, with the recognition of the musical world coming their way, The Miserable Rich will soon find that they have something to truly smile about.

The Miserable Rich - Pisshead/Boatsong (Humble Soul)
Maybe money doesn't buy happiness, but if you spend your money on buying this single, you'll be more pleased with yourself than a kleptomaniac in Tesco.
