Mr Oizo - Positif (Ed Banger/Because Music)

It's hard to believe that in eleven years, Mr Oizo, a DJ and producer supposedly hugely respected in the industry has only had one major hit single in the UK. Cast your minds back to 1999, when that Levi advert had everyone talking (although Flat Eric might have had something to do with it). 'Flat Beat' was a massive hit in that year, reaching number one.

Since then, despite releasing two other albums, he hasn't repeated that success. 'Positif' is the first single released from his new album Lamb's Anger, and it's sufficient to say that this single, unless used by a major advertising company with a video as good as 'Flat Beat', with a character as interesting as Flat Eric, will not make it into the top forty.

As a dance single it's truly dire, using a synth hook about as innovative as a cheese sandwich. It's so annoyingly repetitive that it would be better used as a piece of voice-over music for radio than to be released commercially. Perhaps this is what it was designed for, as the vocals are so useless a DJ would get away with talking all over the tune. The latest traffic update released as a single would actually sound better.

Mr Oizo has lost his way, and he is in desperate need of rekindling the spark he had on his debut. He should produce something different, not a song with a sound that wouldn't sound out of place on a Commodore 64.
