Mystery Jets – 'Two Doors Down' (679)
Is it June already? With the year appearing to have flown by at a ridiculous pace, summer is already upon us. While the jury's still out as to whether the sun's going to play ball or not, you can rest assured that a flurry of songs will start to emerge in the next few weeks, all intent on soundtracking the season of scorch.
The latest release from Mystery Jets' rightly-acclaimed Twenty One album sets the bar high for all those hoping to create the perfect summer smash. It's a heartfelt love ditty, a simple tale of boy-thinking-about-asking-out-girl, definitely worthy of the extensive airplay it's been receiving from local and national radio stations alike.
With punchy drums, a speedily-strummed acoustic guitar and Blaine Harrison's typically warm, fragile vocals the initial driving forces, the track quickly develops into a breezy pop record laced with '80s influences. The glittering keyboards of the chorus, the Dirty Dancing-style saxophone solo, and the uninhibited backing vocal harmonies all combine to give the song a distinctly retro feel, and yet it still somehow manages to sound fresh.
If there's any justice left in the murky realm of the UK singles market, 'Two Doors Down' will be far and away the biggest hit to date for a band whose sound has evolved considerably since their early days. You just get the feeling that the timing of this particular release is impeccable; potentially the moment when Mystery Jets finally make an Eel Pie-shaped dent in the mainstream consciousness.
