Nada Surf - Koko, Camden (08/05/2008)

Since the last time New York's Nada Surf were last over this side of the pond they've had a fresh album out and bassist Daniel Lorca's chaotic dreadlocks have grown a few more inches. However, they've not lost the ability to punch out catchy and joyful crowd pleasing pop rock tunes.

Nada Surf have never really busted into the mainstream in the UK but always seem to play to packed and appreciative audiences, and tonight is no exception. Surprisingly, tonight's set seems to consist of material from the third album Let Go, arguably the band's finest hour.

Sweet melodic vocals from lead singer Matthew Caw with falsetto from Lorca are spot on, as drummer Ira Elliot thunders along varying between heavy rock and skipping disco which reverberates through the audience through Koko's festival-sized sound rig.

'Blonde On Blonde' and 'Killians Red' provide reflective intervals, and the crowd get involved in some synchronised backing vocals and dance moves during the heartbreaking 'Inside Of Love'. Material from the latest long player Lucky crops up here and there, (a return to form after the patchy The Weight Is A Gift) and first single, the majestic 'See These Bones' is a highlight, a soaring reflection on mortality. A glance around at the Koko audience mouthing along word-perfectly to the new material proves that tunes from the new album have left an impression.

The encore ends with a stage invasion from liggers, audience members and support band folk to the strains of "Oh f*** it, I'm gonna have a party!" from 'The Blankest Year' with crowd participation backing vocals and enthusiastic security staff dragging the uninvited and overexcited back to the wings.
