Pete Doherty - Last Of The English Roses (Parlophone)

The latest installment from Pete Doherty comes in the form of new single ‘Last Of The English Roses'. And it's is nothing short of astounding. The track is taken from Doherty's forthcoming debut solo album, Grace/Wastelands and features Blur’s Graham Coxon on guitar. It signals a complete departure from his heady days in The Libertines and Babyshambles.

The tune is tight and well-produced with simple percussion allowing Coxon’s infectiously catchy guitar playing to accentuate Doherty’s dreamy and poetic vocals perfectly. The result of the coming together of these two great talents with producer Stephen Street (Blur/The Smiths) is a very up-beat and cheery tune. It's just the thing to beat the recession blues. The song seems vaguely familiar, even on the first listen, which aids its instant likeability. On the whole it is deeply reminiscent of the sound created by Gorillaz in their prime.

Last Of The English Roses is easily the best and most impressive release from Doherty in a very long time - perhaps since his departure from The Libertines; it bypasses his troubled period with Babyshambles completely. Hopefully it is a taste of things to come from his forthcoming album. If so it will not only be a contender for Album of the Year 2009, but will go far in shaking off the mantel placed on him since the demise of The Libertines.
