Placebo - The Never Ending Why (Astralwerks)
'The Never Ending Why' hails from Placebo's critically acclaimed recent album Battle For The Sun and provides a striking similarity to their previous infectious, head-nodding sound that fans know and love.
Starting with a dramatic ensemble of instruments, it jolts awake before quietening down in time for Brian Molko's vocals. Proving that rhyming couplets can still be endearing, Molko woos with a rhythmic verse with lyrics such as; "As the two of us rebel/Damn you all to hell". As it moves onto the chorus, this lyric becomes immediately infectious.
Providing a more mature sound, Placebo prove that they can still get fans on their feet and feeling the energetic effects of their music. Describing their new sound as neither hard rock nor pop, they settle for 'hard pop', which appears to suit the genre of this song well.
Although, it's difficult not to wonder what the inspiration for the rather deep, bleak lyrics are ("Time will help you through/But it doesn't have the time," and what part of the creative process conjured up such a depressing concept as a Never Ending Why in the first place.
Not ones to disappoint, Placebo appear to be doing the 'emo-for-grown- ups' with style, and after their extensive European summer tour, it is pleasing they have found the time to release this latest gem of a song.

Placebo - Battle For The Sun (PIAS)
Placebo's sixth studio album Battle For The Sun dosen't really live up to its epic title - Brian Molko's teenage angst is still very much in existence.
