Preston - Dressed To Kill (B-Unique)
"I'm ready to be a pop star", said Samuel Preston recently. It is a statement which seems to sum up his confusion. When in the now defunct Ordinary Boys, he moved from singing about charming beachside holidays to complaining about fame and being bothered by having to shoot music videos.
There followed Big Brother, Chantelle and a cringe worthy TV hissy- fit, apparently removing any notion of him being proud to be 'Ordinary'. But then suddenly there was no more Chantelle and no more Ordinary Boys. What was next?
Well, this. 'Dressed To Kill' is definitely pop. But it's bad pop. From the Eurobeat rhythm, to the shoddy, tinny production, to the truly horrendous lyrics ("You slip inside your shoes and slide into the night/You're on the loose/Your skirt is tight"), it is empty, dull and utterly uninspiring.
The song's one saving grace is a catchy tune, the only thing that has remained consistent throughout Preston's career. But listening to this is a disheartening experience, like meeting up with an old schoolfriend who has changed so much and so often that you realise you have nothing in common and nothing to talk about.
If Preston wants to be a pop star, fair enough. 'Dressed To Kill' will help him do that. It is unashamedly directed at the teeny-boppers who read about him in Heat. But if this is really the direction he has finally settled on, everyone else is likely to be left disappointed.
