The Script – T in the Park, Scotland (12/07/2009)
The Script may have a closer affiliation with housewives than ballsy spit and grit rockers, but their matinee performance at Kinross' T in the Park festival proved they aren't merely music for the yummy mummies. They pulled in an ample crowd and smashed musical misconceptions.
Before the Dublin trio had stepped onto the sun-drenched main stage occupying Balado's disused airfield, the Celtic crowd were in choral voice, singing tracks from The Script's eponymous debut album. First to emerge onto the stage was drummer Glen Power, who provided a tribal-esque beat, giving a theatrical element to the entrances of lead guitarist Mark Sheehan and Danny O'Donoghue, the chisel-jawed front man.
The band then took a two-footed plunge into their anthemic set opener and chart busting single 'Before The Worst', a title which was the antithesis of what was to come. As the band, who seamlessly blend hip-hop's punchy soul with melodic rock rhythms, chugged through their perfected set, it was clear to see why, in just a year, the three boys have achieved incredible success, both in Great Britain and across the pond.
The catchy choruses and poppy melodies of 'Break Even' and 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' highlighted the songwriting talents of Sheehan and O'Donoghue, who, at times, paused to soak up the amazing response they were receiving from the Kinross crowd. "I know it's a Sunday, but we've still got a bit left in the tank!" declared a dumfounded O'Donoghue, baffled by the big crowd the boys were bringing in, before launching into tracks such as 'Rusty Halo' and 'Talk You Down'.
As the set drew to a close, it became apparent that The Script, who had, in the past, played legendary Scottish live venue King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, could indeed box with the best of the big bands, both in their musical and crowd-capturing abilities.
To show his gratitude to a captivated crowd, Danny O'Donoghue draped himself in the Scottish flag before launching into 'Heroes' by David Bowie. If today's performance was anything to go by and The Script deliver on their second album, that title may well be achievable.
