Sean Kingston - Tomorrow (Epic)
Kisean Jamal Anderson doesn't sound like someone who would be an R'n'B sensation, which is probably why the youngster goes by the name Sean Kingston. Tommorrow is Kingston's follow-up to his successful 2007 eponymous debut.
It continues in a similar vein to his first album, although it might not spurn a single quite as popular as 'Beautiful Girl'. Somewhere along the line, rhythm and blues singers tend to annoy a lot of people with their jangly gold chains and over-sized egos. Kingston, however, seemed to have almost avoided that annoying overly-confident image. Until now, that is.
Fortunately, once you've got over the ego-tripping introductions which forego each track, you begin notice that he has managed to produce, on the most part, a good collection of smooth-sounding songs – all with a maturity that does not reflect that fact he's still only a teenager.
The first single released from the album, club track 'Fire Burning', isn't the best song on the album; it's the more chilled-out, Jamacian influenced tracks such as 'Island Queen' that seem to display the singer's real talent. Another unusual addition is the dreamy sounding 'Twist Around', which brings welcomed diversity to the LP.
Kingston does seem to rely on the old helping hand of the auto-tune perhaps a little more than he should and this is what, at times, pushes him further into the club scene. 'Shoulda Let You Go' (a collaboration with Good Charlotte) is the album's weakest offering and should probably have been dropped. The album would have been considerably better if this plain and cringe-inducing monstrosity hadn't been included.
Although there are, inevitably, moments where Tomorrow sounds as if it could have come straight from the likes of Akon and Usher, there is just enough variety for Kingston to distinguish himself away from other artists. Even if Hip/Hop and R'n'B doesn't normally float your boat, you should try setting sail with Kingston's Tomorrow, it's a good-fun listen if nothing else.
