Sebastien Grainger & The Mountains - Who Do We Care For? (Saddle Creek)

Sebastien Granger While his old cohort Jesse F. Keeler went about forming MSTRKRFT soon after the demise of Death From Above 1979, by comparison Sebastien Grainger has taken a fair bit of time to emerge properly from the shadows again.

Whereas his initial material, such as 2006's 'When You Go Out', hinted at an electro-pop direction for Grainger's next move, his more recent 'American Names EP' and this new single, 'Who Do We Care For?', have seen him rocking out, backed by his band The Mountains.

'Who Do We Care For?' is an up-tempo two-and-a-half minute stomp, characterised by mucky QOTSA-esque guitars, a cracking chorus and Grainger's sometimes-soulful, otherwise-unpredictable vocals which mark his style out as something akin to what a restless cousin of Mick Jagger might sound like.

It's an intriguing listen, even if you do wonder whether Grainger's voice will hold up over the course of an entire album. There are obvious 70s influences at play here, resulting in a tune which will float the boat of anyone with a penchant for the type of stripped-down garage punk revived by bands such as The Von Bondies and Eagles of Death Metal in recent times.
