Starsailor - All the Plans (Virgin Records)
Starsailor have created some pretty catchy songs to date. Take 'Alcoholic', 'Silence Is Easy', or 'In The Crossfire' - all decent enough tracks to listen to on a rainy day, especially if you're into depressing music. But new single 'All The Plans', from their fourth album of the same name, is nothing more than unimaginative and uninspiring.
'All The Plans' is your regular lacklustre, anthemic rock ballad. Which, granted, is not necessarily a bad thing but in this case Starsailor make the cardinal error of failing to make their track memorable. Incredibly, even after several listens 'All The Plans' still creates little impact.
And the lyrics? Could Starsailor's lyrics be more clichéd? Take "You were on the left with anger in your heart / I was on the right too paranoid to start". Surely not another song about heartache and paranoia... And the line "I want to win your heart" is practically snigger-worthy in its obviousness.
This single's only redeeming fact is singer James Walsh's voice, which is brilliantly bleak and raspy. But when matched with such poor lyrics it does nothing but make you frustrated at the potential Walsh possesses and fails to achieve.
If you like boring stick to Coldplay – at least they still have some street-cred.
