Gossip - Heavy Cross (Columbia Records)

The Gossip have yet to make their mark in America. The country can't seem to handle singer Beth Ditto; the plus-sized, outspoken lesbian who has a tendency to strip on stage. The UK has no such qualms. We love the Gossip and all their quirks - and especially when they continue to release such delicious singles.

'Heavy Cross', released June 15th, is your typical Gossip offering - indie-rock mixed with a good old helping of electronic pop, creating a track that just begs you to dance. Beth Ditto's voice is as angelic and powerful as ever - think somewhere between Tina Turner and Debbie Harry (Blondie) but with that little added spice.

It's a testament to Ditto's vocal talent that she can portray such a heart-warming voice through such a heavily produced track. Yet she does, from the moment she sings: "It's a cruel cruel world/To face on your own". And that little giggle around three minutes into the track is nothing less than adorable.

This track morphs the lyrics of a desperate song into a sexy concoction of heavy drums and raging guitar riffs that Franz Ferdinand would be jealous of. The end result is a track which is dying to be remixed and played in every club in the country.
