The Script – Breakeven (Phonogenic)

According to their record company, The Script were meant to be 'all over 2008'. As the year comes to a close and they release their third single, it would be fair to say they have. The Irish three-piece have come from nowhere (if nowhere is producing the Neptunes) since their first single launched into the charts back in May. The band's now firm fixtures on the playlists of most mainstream UK radio stations.

The trio know how to put a pop song together, and say they try to combine soulful melodies with hip hop beats. This track will definitely appeal to edgier side of the poppy threesome's audience; despite a guitar and drum kit the track couldn’t be further removed from Scouting for Girls.

'Breakeven' is your standard pop song about a break up, in which one party’s clearly dealing with the disintegration of the relationship better than the other. But the combination of the lyrics and the heartfelt way the singer Danny O'Donaghue delivers them makes you want to believe he means it, rather than just reading it from a lyric sheet.

Essentially, this is unchallenging music. You’re not going to finish the song wondering if there are any hidden meanings to the lyrics or melody. That said, the single is very polished and the trio have obviously spent a long time perfecting their art.

Are The Script the middle of the road band it's okay to like? The jury’s still out on that for the moment, but you could definitely argue this band isn’t as commercially appealing to the straight-forward mainstream audience as you might first think.
