The Ting Tings - Be The One (Columbia)
Propelling to stardom at such a fast pace is enough to make anybody question the lifespan of 'the next big thing'. Yet, with three singles and a number one album under their belt, the Ting Tings don't seem to have 'one hit wonders' written into their vocabulary. The Salford duo's latest release is 'Be The One'; another exciting track that has promise, talent and edge.
Leaning towards a more affectionate approach through soft undertones and a feeling of sadness, Katie White and Jules De Martino try their hand here at the kind of story-telling pop that any self-respecting boy band would be proud of. Lyrically simple, it works.
The continuation of a gentle harmony immediately evokes a hypnotic response; luckily, the unaffected Ting Ting drum allows you to be drawn back into reality quick enough for attention. Thank God, because you definitely don’t want to miss out on this particular easy listener. Vivacious and melodic, this single is completely infectious.
With a slight adjustment from their usual sound, it's possible that an avid fan may have certain doubts towards the new less eccentric direction, but fear not. Bordering slightly on uneven ground, White and De Martino are cleverly able to retain their unmistaken sound without destroying all that we know and love. An adventurous gamble that has left us in awe.
