The Ting Tings - That's Not My Name (Columbia)
There is no question that boy/girl combo The Ting Tings are one of the most interesting musical phenomenon’s to hit the airwaves this year. Second single and live favourite ‘That’s not my name’ only serves to enforce this feeling, a song that is utterly breathless and showcases everything that is great about pop music.
Witty lyricism, a pounding drum beat and incessant vocals blend to make a real wonder of a record. ‘They call me quiet, but I’m a riot’, Katie White insists and who can argue. White and her co-star Jules de Martino have had time to perfect their pop sound after experiencing the highs and lows of the music industry with previous incarnation Dear Eskiimo and now appear to have hit the jackpot.
De Martino’s relentless drum beat and a funky bassline are a terrific backdrop, but it is undoubtedly White’s vocal delivery that makes the record so memorable. As she shouts ‘That’s not my name’ and asks ‘Are you calling me darling, are you calling me bird’, with an air of irritation, it is clear it’s best not to mess with Miss White. She is an exciting presence and given exposure could be a terrific Karen O like role-model and poster girl for the new-indie generation.
NME darlings, The Ting Tings could easily have drowned under the weight of ‘the next big thing’ tag but both White and de Martino have seen too much to miss their big chance now. First single ‘Great DJ’ was a wonderful introduction and with an album of similarly sweet pop treats on the horizon this Salford twosome should be around for a long while.
