The Maybes? - Promise (Xtra Mile)
There is no doubt The Maybes? have had a good year. They've played at numerous festivals, launched their own club night in Liverpool and received critical acclaim from the national press. With the release of debut album Promise, it seems there is no looking back for the Scouse group.
Promise is a fantastic album. With its simple guitar riffs and rock-pop feel, it's unsurprising they went down a storm at the summer festivals - it really does get you tapping along. Comparisons to The Who are inevitable, with lead singer Nick Ellis' Daltrey-esque style vocals alongside The Rolling Stones, The Beatles and even at times, U2.
'Summer Time' and 'Disappear' are a little on the bland side and don't really have any staying power, but put these aside and you have a great number of tracks that almost appear to have been slowly perfected over the years. Highlights include 'Boys' (released as a single) which is addictive good fun and psychedelic, swirling and spine-tingling 12-minute title track 'Promise' is nothing short of brilliant.
These guys do have a real talent with their vivid and pleasant sounding pop and occasional added twist. Despite their insistence that they are not the "jingle-jangle Scouse thing", take the title track out the equation and that is essentially what they are, but that's no bad thing.
The five-piece's popularity in their home city of Liverpool is surely to be mirrored across the UK when the album is rolled out. Merseyside has provided the industry with yet another group whose musical ability appears to come naturally and with such ease.
A huge amount of effort was taken on the album to ensure the six-year-old group were in full creative control, which is why they licensed the album to Xtra Mile. After all, who would want any creative interference when they'd produced a collection of songs with such quality? When all the hype dies down, let's hope The Maybes? won't die with it, and that they will continue to release the creativeness that the indie genre really needs at this time.

The Maybes? - Promise (Xtra Mile)
Allegedly formed so ‘girls would come and watch them perform’, there has certainly been a lot of interest in The Maybes? But are they just another over-hyped indie band entering into an already saturated market?

The Maybes? - Boys (Xtra Mile)
A fun, catchy, singalong summer offering that brings the sound of the Rolling Stones into the 21st century.
