The Presets - Nevereverland, The Coronet, London (15/11/2008)
When you think of Australia, what’s the first thing that comes into your head? Kangaroos? Neighbours? Rolf Harris, perhaps? Well, there’s a new one to add to that associative list: The Presets.
For one night only, Nevereverland - an Australian travelling festival - brought its electro-fuelled fun to the northern hemisphere last weekend. Sydney-based duo The Presets headlined the much-hyped event at The Coronet, hitting the stage after the likes of Ladyhawke and Shy Child had worked their charm on the crowd.
It seemed like the entire Australian population of London had turned up for this one-off electro extravaganza. The buzz in the place was, for want of a better word, electrifying.
As soon as the distinctive organ, horror-esque first bars of ‘Talk Like That’ burst out of the sound-system, the dance floor was awash with a mass of gyrating bodies. The two rather talented young men had the whole of The Coronet cast under their spell as they churned out their seemingly never-ending array of danceable tunes.
Considering there are only two of them, Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes make a monstrous amount of noise. Their storming hour-long set was a mind-boggling, limb-crushing, ear-drum-bursting menagerie of electro madness from start to finish.
Pounding bass beats, a cacophony of synth, and possibly the most distinctive vocals of the moment made each and every one of the songs as irresistibly catchy as the next. From the pulsating ‘Anywhere’ to the twisted dark sounds of ‘Are You The One’; with its resonating chorus it was a hard-hitting, full-on musical experience.
The Presets really have mastered the art of putting on more than just your average show. A constantly changing rainbow of lights coupled with relentlessly infectious melodies and thumping rhythms made for a totally mesmerising performance, creating a party atmosphere to rival that of any of the big name clubs.
The band finished things off with the bone-rattling ‘My People’. As the deep synth bass reverberated around the room it was more than clear what all the hype is about with The Presets.
This was electro at it’s deepest, darkest, finest moment.

The Presets - Talk Like That (Modular Recordings)
Yes, it's yet another indie-electro track trying to keep up to date by digging up the past.
