The Streets - Heaven For The Weather (Vice Records)

The Street' Mike Skinner Ever since the release of Skinner's debut album, Original Pirate Material, won the Mercury Music Prize in September 2002, The Streets have gone from strength to strength in terms of mainstream chart success.

Mike Skinner - the man behind the project - has followed a slightly more conventional musical path for the past 4 years. The latest single, 'Heaven For The Weather', sees Skinner revisit the roots that propelled him to fame.

The single is the most upbeat track on Everything Is Borrowed, an otherwise reflective and slower album than we’re used to from The Streets. 'Heaven For The Weather' does, in fact, bear distinct resemblance to 'Don’t Mug Yourself', a track off the first album and Mike Skinner’s proudest recording achievement.

Lyrically, the song is heavily based on the ordinary and mundane - a trait The Streets is perhaps best known for. This time he focuses on the British Weather and how, in particular, it affects his hay fever. It’s ironic that the release date doesn’t coincide with the time of year the song is primarily written about, but that’s unlikely to be an obstacle for the success of the single, or continued success of the album for that matter.

In summery, though the track isn’t as original sounding as 'Don’t Mug Yourself', it is a clear example of Mike Skinner challenging existing commercial industry boundaries.

Release Date: 24th November 2008.

Rating: 4/5
