Those Dancing Days - 100 Club (04/06/2008)
As the five cute school girls that make up Those Dancing Days take the London stage you can't help but feel suddenly very protective towards them. Are they eating properly while on tour, who's looking after them and are they getting to bed on time?
But then the music starts and you quickly realise these cute pop princesses might just be budding geniuses of their genre. It's incredible that such a feel good sound is coming from a quintuple that are likely younger than your kid sister. The band's love for Northern Soul seeps through in their songs, but the foot-tapping synth and fun lyrics give them a modern poppy feel.
Despite a pounding Hammond organ sound and a string of catchy melodies, the band initially struggles to get beyond the tentative feel of a sound check. While the lead singer has a charming softness to her voice, there are times when you wish she'd belt out the lyrics with a bit more passion, keeping in line with her soulful musical influences.
Things finally take off mid-set when the tempo changes. The twee crowd is treated to the band's self-proclaimed signature tune 'Hitten' or in English 'The Hit'. And a hit it was! With lots of clapping on and off stage, everyone was finally ready for the poptastic party they had been expecting.
The drummer requires a special mention for being tighter than '80s spandex, managing to play flawlessly throughout the set while still looking cute and unfazed in her little flowery dress, occasionally glancing up to smile sweetly at the crowd between spot-on fills. This band is a lot of fun. The girls have permanent grins pasted on their faces and they look like they're having candy-filled bags of fun.
By the end of the set, they commanded the crowd at the 100 Club and everyone couldn't help but move as the girls rounded off the night with their popular hit 'Those Dancing Days'. After a disappointingly slow start, the band and the crowd finally warmed up, leaving everyone "dancing through the night, dancing through the days."
Those Dancing Days would have struggled to capture their audience at a bigger venue. This could be down to their age or possibly because they all needed to own the stage and their space a bit more. Time will tell on whether these girls are merely light summer fizz or will mature like vintage champagne.
