Those Dancing Days - The Other Rooms, Newcastle (28/11/2008)
Swedish five-piece Those Dancing Days ensured the dancing kept on going into the night as they arrived onstage at an intimate gig at The Other Rooms in Newcastle.
Playing songs from their debut album ‘In Our Space Hero Suits’ the girls, of school-leaving age, created noisy melodic pop with synths and guitars, and up-tempo beats resulting in a ‘Northern Soul meets girl-band’ sound.
The set, which lasted just under an hour didn’t really get going until the third song ‘Home Sweet Home,’ which stepped up the pace.
Linnea Jönnson’s voice was exactly what you would expect from a Scandinavian vocalist, a powerful back of throat sultriness that appeared even deeper and more nasal compared to her efforts in the recording studio.
While Linnea took centre-stage with the vocals and also contributing musically with tambourine, cymbal and what appeared to be a glockenspiel, the rest of the girls’ contributions should not be understated.
Mimmi Evrell and Rebecka Rolfart both gave perfect performances on the guitars. Cissi Efraimsson made the drums look so easy, whilst still marinating the sweet and innocent image that the band has become recognised for. Lisa Pyk Wirström had an unlimited dose of energy on the powerful Keyboard as she jumped along to each song.
The girls have clearly had the time to finely hone their set and whilst this created a professional image, it did at times appear they were simply going through the motions and gave off a feeling that they might have become a little despondent with the familiar routine.
However there was nothing rehearsed about the passion and enthusiasm showed by the quintuple as they finished with one of their most recognisable tunes to date, the self-titled ‘Those Dancing Days,’ with its liveliness replicated by the audience.
A few issues with volume levels were fortunately ironed out early on and a few muffled and incomprehensible lyrics suggested that Linnea could have left a little more space between her mouth and the microphone in what was otherwise a well executed gig.
For a band that’s been receiving so much praise and attention this year, Those Dancing Days don’t seem too hurried to lap it all up, much preferring to be in a ‘watch this space’ situation.
If the band keep up these high standard live performances they’ve got a promising future ahead of them and with youth on their side, there's even time to mature into something better yet.
