The Ting Tings - We Walk (Columbia)
The Ting Tings continue their obstinate assault on British radio playlists with a fifth single from their number one album ‘We Started Nothing’.
For current fans of the group, it ticks all the boxes: Funky drum patterns? Check. Faux-abstract lyrical turns and slightly off-kilter vocal delivery? Check. Quirkiness spread as thick as peanut butter straight out of the fridge? Check.
A heart-string tugging piano opening which wouldn’t sound out of place in a tragic love ballad heads down a deceptive avenue. This track is another stuttering slice of dancefloor new wave indie, very much in the mould of a slower ‘Great DJ’.
The chorus line: “We’ve got the choice if it all goes wrong – we walk” is a well-received sentiment, and could well be applied to the Ting Tings’ fledgling career. By the sound of this however, they will be dominating the airwaves and indie clubs for some time yet - despite their complete lack of originality and derivative oddness, they possess the gift of infuriating hooks that ensure their songs will burrow into your mind like a particularly bloodthirsty tick.
'We Walk' lacks the insane danceability of ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’, as well as the inadvertently humorous charm of ‘That’s Not My Name’. But it could still prove to be a Radio 1 staple by virtue of its undeniable catchiness. It’s not outstanding, but as disposable art-pop goes, it deserves a listen.
