We Are Scientists - Chick Lit (Virgin)

It's hard not to like We Are Scientists. They come across as incredibly down to earth, two guys just having a good time with their music. Unfortunately for the fans, their sophomore album has not been the success story they no doubt hoped for. It's usually the case with bands that their second album is not as good as the first, and Brain Thrust Mastery' hasn't broken that curse.

'Chick Lit' is one of the tracks which cushions the blow. It's a standout track from the album, showcasing their growing maturity. It contains the foundations of their raw indie sound from debut album Crap Attack, now fully developed into a fresh, toe-tapping epic.

Full of harmonising vocals and wailing guitars and synths, it's one for the rock clubs. Expect to hear it at a venue near you, and expect it to do well in the charts too. Choosing to reduce the band to just two permanent members has proven to be a good choice. It means that the supporting musicians can always provide something new, something many indie bands struggle to achieve. In this case, the band has produced a heavier sound to their previous material, taking influences from acts such as Bloc Party and Placebo.

If 'Chick Lit' is a sign of things to come in the future, the future is bright for We Are Scientists.
