Wild Beasts - We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues (Domino)

The third single to be taken from last year's second album, Two Dancers, 'We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tounges' is probably the most compelling argument yet to listen to Wild Beasts.

You'd be forgiven, though, for mistaking Hayden Thorpe's opening howl over the first few bars, with that of Antony Hegarty's usual vocal gymnastics. However, the track quickly progresses from a subdued piano intro to reveal shimmering guitars.

They provide a compelling backdrop for Thorpe's ode to youth. "Us kids are cold and cagey rattling around the town, scaring the oldies into their dressing gowns", he sings as if roaming the deserted streets himself.

There's a sense of adventure and discovery to the lyrics, but the musical backdrop, no matter how good, doesn't quite convey the same feeling. The delicate nature of the primarily piano-led track and Thorpe's haunting voice seem to bring to mind a feelings of regret instead.

The irony is that towards the end of track, he exclaims: "Why should we feel bad for what we've done? We still got the taste dancin' on our tongues". Whether intentional or not this slight imbalance doesn't really detract from the feeling that this is a band who are beginning to find their own musical stride, whilst carving out their own sound at the same time.

'We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tounges' shows a lot of promise. Two Dancers has been received well, and this single is a good example of why.
