Spinnerette - Ghetto Love EP (Anthem Records)

Let’s be honest, do you really know much about this band apart from the fact that it’s Brody Dalle’s new venture? Well then good, you’ve come to the right place. Prepare to be surprised if you were hoping for a Distillers II.

Effectively described as ‘grime’, this really sums up the style of the band. With electro undertones, the dirty, fuzzed guitar riffs and rhythmic drumbeats provide a strong background for Dalle’s distinctive vocals. This vocal element is what stands out most on the EP; catchy backing vocals are what really makes up the majority of the melody and ends up being stuck in your head after the songs are over.

Members including musicians hailing from bands such as Pearl Jam and Queens of the Stone Age makes for a good formula, and this new collective shows Dalle singing in ways that may have been previously unexpected. The only song that sounds vaguely like a Distillers track is ‘Valium Nights’, mainly due to the change in electro sounds.

Title song 'Ghetto Love' easily paves the way for the others - it's highly likeable and extremely catchy. It definitely has an active hold on the listener, either inspiring a good old fashioned sing along, or inspiring one to grab a can of beer and dance like a lunatic. This EP shows a strong start from Spinnerette, and provides plenty of prospect for furthering success with their music.
